American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009, with the intent to stimulate economic growth, create or save millions of jobs, enhance our domestic renewable energy capacity, safeguard the well-being of our most vulnerable residents, and strengthen our national infrastructure through a variety of multibillion dollar investments.

AUB worked diligently to bring some of the ARRA funding to bear on critical projects in our community, particularly with regard to our sanitary sewer system in areas where aging collection lines can no longer adequately prevent groundwater from entering the sanitary sewer, which creates backups and overflows that are environmentally unacceptable.

Recovery Act Awards for Athens Utilities Board:

Name of Award      Collection System Expansion, Rehabilitation, and Replacement
Received from      Tennessee State Revolving Fund Loan Program
Dollar Amount      $4,090,395.00

Brief Description      A project to rehabilitate some 12,600 feet of existing wastewater (sanitary sewer) main lines, install approximately 25,000 feet of new force main lines, and install some 8,200 feet of new gravity main lines. This project also involves extending wastewater services to parts of the AUB service territory that need the services for environmental and economic development purposes and includes rehabilitation/restoration of sections of line in the city of Athens that routinely overflow during wet weather conditions. This project will allow lines to be resized and replaced, thus creating a collection system physically capable of handling the requisite flow in this portion of the collection system and on to the Oostanaula Wastewater Treatment Plant.
