Saving Energy
|
Did you know?
|
|
Americans use twice as much energy as necessary to heat their homes. That accounts for a lot of wasted energy!
|
It may be hard to believe, but every 20 years American households use twice as much energy as they did before. For example, we used twice as much energy in 2002 as we did in 1982.
So it’s important as ever to make sure to save energy where you can.
- Checking the lights: Make sure you always turn the lights off when you are the last one to leave a room at home or at school.
- Bundle up: Put a sweater on instead of turning the heat up when you are cold at home.
- Don’t leave outside doors open when the heater or air conditioner is running.
- Appliances: Turn off stereos, radios, TVs, VCRs and clocks when you are not using them. If you are not going to use them for a long time, unplug them.
- Make sure your video games and computers are off before you leave the house. They use a lot of energy.
- Ask your parents to keep the thermostat to 78 degrees during the summer and 68 in the winter.
- Don’t stand in front of the refrigerator with the door open. Instead, decide what you want before you open it.
- Cook food in the microwave instead of the oven.
- Make sure the dishwasher or clothes washer is full before running it.
