ATHENS, Tenn. – A recent financial report by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) ranks Athens Utilities Board (AUB) among the very best in the Valley relative to management of operations and finances.

The upshot of all this?  Some of the lowest rates among all TVA distributors.

The report shows that for 2018, among TVA’s 155 power distributors in a seven-state region of the Southeast, AUB’s power rates were the lowest among similar sized distributors, the lowest among neighboring utilities, and were the second lowest among all 155 Valley distributors.

“This is great news for our customers and it is professional validation for our board and workforce.  It reveals in hard data the diligence that every AUB employee puts forth to work efficiently, to spend responsibly, and to get the most out of every ratepayer dollar,” said AUB’s Wayne Scarbrough.

The financial review and report by TVA of its distributors examines key indicators of a company’s financial health, its ability to meet fiscal obligations, its control of losses to uncollectible accounts, and its management of operation and maintenance expenses.

“It reinforces for our workforce that the efforts we and they make daily to pay attention to detail pay off in having a business model to be proud, one that yields high-quality service and low rates for our customers across the communities we serve,” Scarbrough said.

AUB General Manager Eric Newberry said that the utility’s rank in the Valley is the result of constant diligence by every AUB employee.

“This doesn’t happen by accident.  It comes from attention to the details of our work as well as the overall big picture, every day, year in and year out,” he said.

“From top to bottom at AUB, we continually emphasize cost control and efficiency in every meeting, in planning every job, in considering every expenditure.  Our board and ratepayers rightly expect it of us and our employees deliver, and we are keenly appreciative of how they take this issue to heart,” Newberry said.
