MOTHER NATURE TAKES A TOLL ON THE POWER SYSTEM FOR THE SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW

It was a another pretty busy night for emergency response personnel at AUB with yet a second evening in a row of powerful thunderstorms in our area.

Crews were tired but busy all day yesterday still cleaning up from the prevailing storm cells that hit Englewood and parts of Athens on Tuesday night.  Then yesterday at about 5:45 p.m. we had a tree fell near Sock Hill Avenue in Englewood and take a power pole down with it.  This was near the corner of Englewood Avenue and Old Englewood Road, near Englewood Elementary school.  This affected a total of 159 customer accounts and took quite a while to sort out, as the pole could not be pulled easily creating a need to call the Tennessee 811 One-Call system to be safe.  Power was fully restored to all customers at 11:50 p.m..

During this time, a tree got onto lines on Lee Highway in Athens and took a bit to figure out, as lighting had hit a capacitor bank near Seaton’s at Old Niota Road in Athens.  This affected power to 112 accounts.  A capacitor bank helps distribution systems such as AUB’s stabilize voltage on the system. 

Other than that, crews stayed on the ball with smaller outages that affected a couple of customers here and there.  Wire was down in a parking lot on East Avenue, and metal siding was found to have blown onto a line between Farm Credit and AgCentral on North Congress Parkway.

All was wrapped up by about midnight.
