Athens, Tenn. – The Athens Utilities Board (AUB) has completed its annual Water Quality Report for the 2016 reporting year and is distributing the document to interested consumers.

For the reporting period, AUB water quality exceeded all state and federal water quality standards.

“Our community can be thankful to have excellent source water and proud to have a group of people in AUB’s water division that treats, tests and distributes that water to the highest quality standards.  And it tastes good, too,” said AUB’s Wayne Scarbrough.

The Water Quality Report includes information on the origin and treatment of AUB water and detailed data generated from water sampling and testing throughout 2016.

To ensure system-wide superior water, AUB performs year-round tests at wells and springs, at AUB’s plant where source water is treated, at points throughout the distribution system, and at selected homes and businesses.

“All water systems have times when some air or a small amount of sediment is in the water after a main-line break or after maintenance if an air pocket gets by blow-off valves.  Even under the scrutiny our operators exact, that can happen,” Scarbrough said.  “Those are issues quickly cleared with zero health impact.”

“What our Water Quality Report details are where your water comes from, how we test it, scrutinize it and treat it throughout the year and throughout the community, and the data table shows you how our community’s water measures up against strict state and federal standards,” Scarbrough said.

AUB-supplied drinking water comes from the community’s Ingleside spring and from wells that tap an underground aquifer that parallels Oostanaula Creek in Athens.

Water from these sources is treated at AUB’s filter plant.

A third water source is the Hiwassee Utility Commission, which supplements AUB’s water supply with treated surface water from the Hiwassee River.

The 2016 report is available on AUB’s website at http://aub.trademarkads.org/document-library/water-quality-reports/2016-water-quality-report.

AUB is distributing copies of the report to strategic locations throughout the service area, such as schools, nursing homes, industrial plants, and municipal facilities.  The report is also available at the AUB main office at 100 New Englewood Road in Athens.
