Athens Utilities Board Congratulates Newest Journeyman Lineman: Dylan Russell

Athens Utilities Board (AUB) is proud to recognize and congratulate Dylan Russell on achieving the significant milestone of becoming a Journeyman Lineman. Dylan’s journey into the world of utilities began right out of high school, fueled by a passion for linework that truly runs in his veins.

Dylan began his career by joining the lineman’s union and taking a position with a contract company. But his introduction to the trade started much earlier. His father, a longtime AT&T employee, taught Dylan to climb poles at a young age—an experience that clearly sparked a lifelong calling.

“Climbing poles and working on the line is something I’ve always felt at home doing,” Dylan shared. “It’s more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle.”

And for Dylan, utility work is a true family affair. His brother works in the gas division of a neighboring utility, while his father-in-law and brother-in-law are also linemen. That deep sense of family carries over to his work as well.

“Dylan is a great addition to our team,” said Stan Roderick, AUB Power Foreman. “His enthusiasm, work ethic, and passion for helping others are evident every day.”

Dylan's daily responsibilities include maintaining and repairing power lines, performing pole and bucket work, responding to service calls, and working in all types of weather conditions. Whether he's restoring power in the dead of night or ensuring system reliability on sunny days, his dedication never wavers.

His favorite part of the job? Storm work.

“Storm work is intense, but it’s where you see the heart of this job,” Dylan said. “Helping restore power to people who are in need—it’s incredibly satisfying. You feel like you’re really making a difference.”

Outside of work, Dylan enjoys spending time outdoors, hunting with family and friends. He and his wife Emma recently welcomed their second child, Holland (9 weeks old), and are raising their two-year-old son, Harrison, right here in McMinn County.
