ATHENS, Tenn.--Athens Utilities Board (AUB) is working with the city of Athens to close a section of Rocky Mount Road between Old Riceville Road and Dennis Street on Tuesday morning, December 5, for a short period of time so that AUB crews can install a water tap.
The work will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning and should be finished by noon barring unforeseen issues.
Traffic will still flow on Old Riceville Road and Dennis Street including across the Dennis Street bridge, with West Madison Avenue being the detour route to those streets.
The water tap is being made in support of the construction of a new commercial building on Rocky Mount Road behind the Coordinated Charities facility.
The water main that AUB crews will tap is near the centerline of Rocky Mount Road, and this necessitates the road closure to through traffic.
Local traffic will have access to businesses in the affected area, and AUB is working with local businesses to ensure no interruptions to shipping and receiving operations.
AUB urges the public to observe all signage and road blocks to ensure the safety of workers and others.
This work will involve excavations and heavy equipment with large moving parts as well as workers whose focus will be on the job at hand, not errant traffic. Driving around barricades or through a road block could get a worker or the vehicle passengers injured or killed.
AUB thanks everyone for their cooperation and support of this community project.
