Athens, Tenn.—Employees of Athens Utilities Board (AUB) have set a new company record for giving by personally contributing $33,891.04 to this year’s United Way of McMinn and Meigs County fundraising campaign.

AUB spokesman Wayne Scarbrough said that 71 of AUB’s 98 employees, or 72 percent of the local utility’s workforce, contributed to the cause this year.

Of the 71 contributors, 37 pledged to give one hour’s pay per month, a level known as “fair share” giving.

Thirty-two AUB employees gave at the President’s Council level of at least $500.

“Everywhere I turn at AUB I am increasingly impressed by the caliber of my colleagues.  Not only do they know their jobs and perform them well, they know what it means to give and to serve others and they do it sincerely,” Scarbrough said.

AUB General Manager Eric Newberry also applauded the employees’ generosity.

“We make it clear at our campaign kickoff at AUB every year that giving is a personal choice, there is no pressure, and no one will be judged on their personal decisions about donating.

“They make the decision to give as individuals because they understand the needs and they trust our local United Way to meet those needs.  They give because they know what United Way partner agencies do for people in McMinn and Meigs counties,” he said.
